About the event

The novels and short stories of Thomas Hardy, as well as being well-written and having good plots, provide a rich source of material for students of social history. In his works Hardy shows the effects of the rigid class structure of the Nineteenth Century upon his characters and how life in rural Wessex was affected by the coming of the railway, the spread of education and many other changes that he noted.
